The article, “Tiny US town that’s suddenly on the radar,” features the remote town of Utqiaġvik, formally known as Barrow, Alaska. This city, located within the Arctic Circle, is one of the most unique vacation destinations in the world. It also happens to be a stop on our new 7-day Polar Bear Adventure tour!
The City of Utqiaġvik
The City of Utqiaġvik is the northernmost human settlement in the US. It sits 320 miles north of the arctic circle and is so remote that it can only be reached by plane or boat. It’s a place of extremes, where temperatures average only 50 °F in the summer months and plummet to as low as -47 °F in the winter. Bordered by an icy tundra on one side and the mostly frozen Arctic Ocean on the other, it has a fierce and unique beauty all its own. But despite these conditions, the native Inupiat have made this area their home for over 1,500 years. They were able to sustain themselves by looking to the sea for food. To this day, the Inupiat still use many of the same traditional techniques for fishing and whaling as their ancestors did for hundreds of years.
Despite its remote location and ancient traditions, however, the City of Utqiaġvik has all the modern conveniences of any other US town. They have a grocery store, restaurants, hospitals, schools, a library, and a post office. So while it is isolated, you’re not far from everything that you might need. It’s a perfect blend of the old and the new, the wild and the domestic. And it’s a perfect chance to learn about traditional life in the Arctic and to view the region’s most iconic animals, the polar bears.
The Polar Bear Adventure Tour
Our new Polar Bear Adventure tour takes you to the City of Utqiaġvik as well as Kaktovik, in search of North America’s largest predator! These fierce creatures can stand over seven feet tall on their hind legs and can weigh more than one thousand pounds. While you might be able to visit them at a zoo in an artificial enclosure, seeing a polar bear, in person, traveling quietly across the Arctic ice in search of food is a powerful experience. One that we are excited to share with our adventurous travelers!
You’ll travel through Northern Alaska for seven days, meeting with local culture bearers, elders of the native Inupiat tribe, environmentalists, and experts in the Arctic ecosystems and the local bear population. They will teach you about the history, culture, and ecology of one of the most isolated places on Earth. You’ll eat amazing food like fresh Alaskan salmon and king crab and you’ll have the opportunity to see the Northern Lights on full display. But most importantly, you’ll be able to go on four different polar bear viewing excursions, ensuring that you’ll get to see these beautiful creatures up close and in person.
