Southeast Alaska is one of the few places on Earth where humpback whale watching is not a matter of luck. Glacial flour — finely ground rock particles carried by meltwater from the region's tidewater glaciers — adds additional minerals that fertilize these blooms. The result is a marine ecosystem of extraordinary productivity, one that functions as a reliable summer feeding ground for humpbacks migrating north from their winter breeding grounds in Hawaii and Mexico.

Humpbacks have been returning to the same Southeast Alaska feeding grounds for generations. Individual whales are identified by the unique black-and-white pattern on the underside of their tail flukes, and researchers with organizations like the Happywhale project have documented the same animals returning to Frederick Sound and Icy Strait year after year — in some cases for decades.

Frederick Sound: The Heart of Humpback Country

Frederick Sound is the open-water passage separating Kupreanof Island from the Alaskan mainland, connecting Stephens Passage to the south with Chatham Strait to the north. Its depth, its position at the intersection of several productive waterways, and the sheer volume of herring that school here each summer make it one of the most reliable humpback feeding grounds in Alaska.

Peak activity runs from June through September. During July and August it is not unusual to count 20 or more individual humpbacks visible simultaneously from a single point on the water — some feeding cooperatively in groups, others traveling alone, others simply resting at the surface in behavior researchers call logging.

Frederick Sound is also one of the premier locations in the world to witness bubble-net feeding — a cooperative hunting behavior unique to humpbacks that, once seen, is impossible to forget. More on that below.

Icy Strait: Where the Inside Passage Meets the Open Pacific

Icy Strait connects the sheltered waters of the Inside Passage to Cross Sound and the open Gulf of Alaska, funneling nutrient-rich tidal flow past the small Tlingit community of Hoonah on Chichagof Island. The strait's strong tidal currents concentrate herring and other prey in predictable locations, making it a consistent destination for feeding humpbacks throughout the summer.

Stephens Passage

The long north-south channel connecting Juneau to Frederick Sound, Stephens Passage is a whale highway during the summer months. Humpbacks are regularly encountered here both traveling between feeding grounds and actively feeding along the passage's productive edges. It also passes the mouth of the Endicott Arm — a remote wilderness fjord reached only by small vessels — where harbor seals haul out on ice floes at the face of Dawes Glacier and whale sightings are common on the approach.

Glacier Bay National Park

Glacier Bay National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Alaska's most visited marine destinations. The park's protected waters support significant humpback populations during summer, along with orcas, Steller sea lions, harbor seals, and an extraordinary diversity of seabirds. The dramatic backdrop of tidewater glaciers calving directly into the sea makes every wildlife encounter here feel amplified.

Chatham Strait

The long channel running north-south along the western edge of Admiralty Island, Chatham Strait is a productive feeding corridor for humpbacks moving between Icy Strait and Frederick Sound. When to Go: Humpback Whale Seasonality in Southeast Alaska

May: Early arrivals, uncrowded waters

The first humpbacks return to Southeast Alaska in May as they migrate north from their winter breeding grounds. Whale densities are lower than mid-summer but encounters can be outstanding — and the waterways are quieter, with fewer vessels competing for viewing space. Wildlife behavior can be particularly interesting in May as whales re-establish feeding patterns and social groups begin forming.

June–July: Season builds to peak

By June, humpback numbers in Frederick Sound and Icy Strait are increasing rapidly. Bubble-net feeding groups begin forming as herring concentrations grow. July typically marks the start of peak season, with the largest number of individual whales present and the highest frequency of dramatic surface behaviors including full breaches, pec slapping, and coordinated group feeding.

August–September: Maximum density and feeding intensity

August and early September represent the peak of humpback activity in Southeast Alaska. Whales are feeding intensively to build blubber reserves before the autumn migration south — a process called hyperphagia. The urgency of this feeding drive means more frequent surfacing, larger bubble-net feeding groups, and longer periods of observable behavior per encounter. September also brings the first hints of autumn color to the surrounding forests and mountains.

Humpback Whale Behaviors: What You'll See on the Water

A day in Frederick Sound or Icy Strait can produce any combination of the following behaviors. Each one tells you something about what the whale is doing and why.

Breaching

A humpback launching up to 90% of its body clear of the surface before crashing back in an explosion of white water. The reasons are debated — communication, parasite removal, play — but witnessing it from close range is one of wildlife watching's genuinely arresting moments. The sound arrives a fraction of a second after the splash, a deep concussive boom that carries across open water.

Bubble-net feeding

Southeast Alaska is one of the only places on Earth where you can regularly watch groups of humpbacks hunt cooperatively using this technique. A lead whale produces a feeding call — a loud, descending vocalization that causes herring to compress tightly in panic — while other group members swim in ascending spirals below the school, releasing air through their blowholes to create a cylindrical curtain of bubbles. Herring will not cross the bubble curtain. The school compresses into a dense mass near the surface. Then the entire group of whales lunges upward through the center simultaneously, mouths open, engulfing thousands of fish in a single coordinated pass.

The precision required — coordinating vocalizations, bubble placement, and the timing of the lunge across a group of up to 15 individuals — is one of the most sophisticated cooperative behaviors documented in any non-human animal. Researchers believe it is culturally transmitted, learned by younger whales from experienced group members over years of feeding together.

Spy-hopping

A whale rising vertically out of the water to hold its head above the surface — seemingly observing the world above the waterline. Spy-hopping whales will often rotate slowly, appearing to survey their surroundings. There is something distinctly mutual about the experience of being spy-hopped by a humpback from a small boat at close range.

Pec slapping and lobtailing

Humpbacks have the longest pectoral fins of any whale — up to 15 feet in length. Pec slapping involves repeatedly raising a fin and slapping it flat against the water's surface, producing a sharp crack. Lobtailing is the same behavior performed with the tail flukes. Both are thought to serve communicative functions, and both produce sounds loud enough to carry considerable distances underwater.

Fluking

As a humpback dives deep, it raises its tail flukes clear of the surface in one of wildlife photography's most iconic images. Each whale's fluke pattern — a unique combination of black-and-white markings, scars, and trailing edge shape — functions as a fingerprint. Photo-ID researchers use fluke images to track individual whales across years and thousands of miles of ocean, building long-term records of migration routes, feeding site fidelity, and social relationships.

Logging

A whale lying motionless at the surface, barely moving, breathing slowly and deeply. Logging whales are resting. It looks anticlimactic at first but there is something quietly powerful about a 40-ton animal lying completely still in open water — close enough to hear the long exhale of each blow.

Why Vessel Size Changes Everything

Federal regulations under the Marine Mammal Protection Act require all vessels to maintain a minimum distance of 100 yards from most whales and 150 yards specifically from humpbacks. Every boat on the water operates under the same rules. But not every boat can access the same waters.

Large cruise ships and even mid-size expedition vessels are physically unable to enter many of Southeast Alaska's most productive whale watching areas. The Endicott Arm, Fords Terror Wilderness, and Windham Bay Wilderness Area all require a small, highly maneuverable vessel to navigate safely. A 20-person yacht can position quietly in locations that a 200-passenger ship will never reach.

Beyond access, there is the matter of perspective. Standing on the deck of a small vessel at water level — rather than on a cruise ship railing ten stories above the sea — is a fundamentally different experience. The scale of a surfacing humpback, the sound of the blow, the smell carried on the exhale: none of that translates from a distance or from height. The closer you are to the waterline, the more the encounter belongs to both of you.

What Other Wildlife Will You Encounter?

The same productive waters that draw humpbacks to Southeast Alaska support a remarkable range of marine and coastal wildlife. A well-planned itinerary in this region is never only about whales.

  • Orcas: Both resident fish-eating and transient mammal-hunting orca pods are present throughout Southeast Alaska. Encounters are unpredictable but not uncommon, particularly in Stephens Passage and Chatham Strait.
  • Steller sea lions: Large rookeries haul out on rocky outcrops throughout the region. Adult males can weigh over 2,000 pounds and are among North America's most imposing marine mammals.
  • Harbor seals: Ubiquitous in Southeast Alaska's calmer waters, harbor seals frequently haul out on ice floes at tidewater glacier faces — one of the more unusual wildlife viewing situations anywhere in Alaska.
  • Tufted and horned puffins: Both puffin species are present in Southeast Alaska and regularly seen from the water near Glacier Bay and along the outer coast.
  • Brown bears: Admiralty Island National Monument — known as the Fortress of the Bears — supports one of the world's highest concentrations of brown bears and is accessible from the same waterways used to reach the prime whale watching areas.
  • Bald eagles: A near-constant presence along Southeast Alaska's shorelines, nesting in old-growth Sitka spruce and perching on exposed rocks and kelp beds throughout the region.
  • Sea otters: Present in growing numbers following population recovery, sea otters are frequently spotted floating on their backs in the kelp beds of sheltered bays — often with pups resting on their chests.

  • Layering system — moisture-wicking base layer, insulating mid layer, waterproof and windproof shell
  • Waterproof trousers for exposed deck time
  • Sturdy, non-slip, waterproof footwear
  • Binoculars — 8x42 or 10x42 for optimal magnification and low-light performance
