Can You See the Northern Lights in Nevada? Aurora Viewing Guide
Despite Nevada's reputation for wide skies and remote deserts, it is not a viable destination for Northern Lights viewing. Nevada sits far south of the auroral oval, and the odds of seeing the aurora borealis here are extremely low — even during the most active solar years.
Is Aurora Viewing Possible in Nevada?
In practical terms: no. While a rare and faint glow might reach extreme northern areas of Nevada during a severe geomagnetic storm, such events are exceedingly uncommon. Most of the state lies well outside the auroral zone and lacks the geomagnetic latitude necessary for regular sightings.
What Parts of Nevada Have the Slimmest Possibility?
- Remote areas near the Idaho border during KP 8+ solar storms
- Dark-sky zones far from city lights — but only under exceptional conditions
Can You See the Northern Lights in Las Vegas or Reno?
No. Cities like Las Vegas, Reno, and Carson City are far too far south and heavily impacted by light pollution. Even during peak solar activity, seeing the aurora in Nevada’s urban centers is virtually impossible.
Aurora Forecast Outlook (2026–2030)
The forecast below reflects global solar activity associated with Solar Cycle 25 — not Nevada-specific predictions. Most of this activity will impact high-latitude regions near the magnetic poles, not the Southwest U.S.
Year | Aurora Activity Forecast | Notes |
---|---|---|
2026 | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very High | Global solar maximum. Excellent for aurora in northern regions. |
2027 | ⭐⭐⭐⭐½ Extremely High | Strong geomagnetic storm potential continues, but mostly benefits northern states. |
2028 | ⭐⭐⭐ Moderate to High | Declining activity. Occasional storms possible in auroral zones. |
2029 | ⭐⭐ Low to Moderate | Solar activity decreases further. Aurora sightings become less frequent. |
2030 | ⭐ Low | Solar minimum approaches. Very low chance for any auroral events globally. |
Where You Should Go Instead
If witnessing the Northern Lights is a priority, you’ll need to head north. Nevada simply does not offer the conditions necessary for reliable aurora viewing. We recommend checking out our full list of top states where seeing the aurora is far more likely:
