Northern Lights in New Jersey – Is It Possible to See the Aurora Here?
New Jersey is not a practical location for seeing the Northern Lights. Due to its southern latitude, dense urban development, and high levels of light pollution, sightings of the aurora borealis here are nearly nonexistent. While rare exceptions have occurred during intense solar storms, they are extremely uncommon and fleeting.
Is Aurora Viewing Possible in New Jersey?
In theory, yes — but only during the strongest geomagnetic storms, and only in isolated areas of the far northwestern part of the state. For the vast majority of New Jersey residents, the chance of seeing the aurora is virtually zero.
Locations With the Slightest Chance
- Rural areas in Sussex or Warren County
- Dark sky parks or elevated terrain away from major highways
Can You See the Northern Lights in Newark, Trenton, or Jersey City?
No. These metro areas are too far south and heavily light-polluted. Even under extreme solar activity, the aurora would be far too dim to compete with city glow. Residents interested in aurora viewing should plan to travel much farther north.
Global Aurora Forecast Outlook (2026–2030)
This forecast reflects expected global solar activity under Solar Cycle 25. It indicates auroral potential for high-latitude regions near the auroral oval — not New Jersey specifically.
Year | Aurora Activity Forecast | Notes |
---|---|---|
2026 | ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Very High | Peak of Solar Cycle 25. Frequent geomagnetic storms expected. |
2027 | ⭐⭐⭐⭐½ Extremely High | Lingering high activity year. Still excellent for aurora chasers—at northern latitudes. |
2028 | ⭐⭐⭐ Moderate | Activity begins tapering off. Fewer large events, but still visible in the far north. |
2029 | ⭐⭐ Low to Moderate | Storms become sporadic and less intense. Limited activity. |
2030 | ⭐ Low | Solar minimum conditions return. Aurora activity drops significantly. |
Where to Actually See the Aurora
