Grizzly Bear Viewing at Katmai National Park

brown-bear-in-katmai-alaskaKatmai National Park is famous for many things; from the valleys and lakes carved out by glaciers, to the active volcanoes and the Valley of Ten Thousand Smokes. However, arguably the biggest attraction for people from all over the world is the chance to see grizzly bears up close.

Katmai National Park is home to Brooks Lodge; a world famous site for viewing grizzly bears. On our Glaciers & Grizzlies Adventure tour our travellers take a chartered flight to Katmai National Park to view grizzly bears. The views from the plane are incredible, but the views of the bears are even better! We spend several hours watching the bears feed, play, and mingle at Brooks Falls.

Safe Bear Tours

Grizzly bears are one of the largest predators in North America; they can weigh over 1,000 pounds and stand up to 7-feet tall. The bears in Katmai National Park tend to be larger than their cousins that live in Europe and Asia. Grizzlies have a reputation for being fierce (as the name suggests!), but they are not aggressive unless they feel threatened. The safest way to see these impressive creatures is to travel with an experienced guide. This ensures you can have the thrilling experience of seeing giant grizzly bears up-close without danger.

The scene that a lot of bear-watchers are hoping to witness is the iconic view of grizzly bears feeding on salmon. Salmon are born in river beds before swimming out into the ocean. Once they mature, they return upriver to spawn. The bears, which are normally solitary, gather in rivers to feast on the salmon as they swim upstream from June – September each year. Brooks Lodge in Katmai National Park is the perfect place to view this spectacle.
